Washburn approves first Renaissance Zone applications
Washburn City Commissioner Kim Klaudt had exciting news for the commission Monday night as he presented two renaissance zone applications that were approved by the Renaissance Zone Committee. “I think this is pretty good since we just got this going not too long ago,” Klaudt said. Agreeing with the recommendations of the Renaissance Zone Committee, the city commission approved applications from Lowell Rader for an addition to a rental property and from Dakota Farms to rebuild the restaurant that was destroyed by a fire last year. Klaudt said there was one more application, from Nathan Grubb, which was denied by the committee because Grubb had started the project before the city’s renaissance zone was approved by the state.

Dry conditions not stopping planting
If wind were rain there’d be no drought and Lake Sakakawea would be full to the brim. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. This past week rain was forecast for parched north central and western North Dakota. But instead of moisture, the wind came and continued through the weekend. Southwest North Dakota received some moisture this past Thursday. One example is Hettinger where approximately .88 fell.  Tuesday, God answered prayer as showers moved through the county. But the precipitation is only a drop in the bucket that will turn frowns into smiles. Dry conditions persist. Pat Carpentier, McLean County Agent, observes that while there are a few farmers who have suspended planting, for the most part there is a lot of seed in the ground and most are going about business as usual.

Washburn-Wilton Track and Field keeping busy
The Washburn-Wilton Track and Field team has spent a lot of hours in a bus in the last week. The bus went to Dickinson last Tuesday, Velva on Friday, and Bismarck on Saturday. Several Washburn-Wilton tracksters took first place in their events in the past week. At the Badlands Conference Meet in Dickinson, Joe Kaiser won the 800 with a time of 2:05.64. At that same meet, Tiffany Jaeger won both the 1600 and the 3200 with times of 5:43.14 and 12:42.45, respectively. Other outstanding efforts at the Badlands Conference Meet included Justin Bredding taking second in the 3200 in a time of 12:06.07, Kyle Sailer winning second in the high jump with a leap of 5-10 and second in the triple jump with a 39-3.
