New dentist in Velva The tragic death of Velva’s popular young dentist earlier this year left a hole in the heart of this community that cannot be filled. But it appears his office space will be. Dr. Jon Florence, 41, died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack on January 20, and shortly afterwards, Williston dentist Colleen Hofer, DDS, began helping out, taking patients at the Velva office every Monday. Now, she is moving her entire practice to Velva, and as of May 13, will serve full time as the community’s new dentist. Fire burns miles of ditches The Anamoose Fire Department, along with firefighters from Harvey and Drake, fought last Sunday’s blaze at Martin. The fire, which ran through the ditches two miles both east and west town, was started by a passing train. Heavy smoke and poor visibility contributed to a rear-end collision between and SUV and a motorhome along Highway 52 near the fire, but resulted in no serious injuries. The fire call went out around 1 p.m. and the local firemen had the flames under control by 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Current dry conditions have contributed to several fires in the tri-county area over the last week. Still qualifying The Velva-Drake track team is running down more state qualifying times, and racking up a good number of state entries. At last week’s second place finish in the Rugby meet, Brittney Thingstad, Kara Kuntz, Brittany Berndt and Courtney Thingstad hammered out a state qualifying time (04:14.28) in the 1600m relay, and Anna Knutson joined Berndt and the Thingstad girls to qualify in the 800m relay with a first place finish of 01:48.18.
